The Organic Farmer Radio - TOF Radio

The Organic Farmer (TOF) Radio project produces and broadcasts farmer radio programs in both Swahili for national reach and in 4 vernacular languages; Luhya, Kisii, Kikamba, and Kikuyu targeting specific regions.

Through the National broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) regional stations, Ingo FM, Minto FM, Mwatu FM, and Coro FM and Swahili station Radio Maisha, TOF Radio reaches an estimated 4 million small scale farmers in Kenya.

The Kilimo Hai Swahili program and Wealth is in the farm vernacular radio programs cover ecologically sustainable agriculture topics in a way that a listener can learn and practice.

Understanding our target audience needs is the primary focus during our preparation of the radio programs. Thus TOF Radio media network now includes a farmer training video unit and an article in the Standard’s Newspaper Smart harvest pull out. The purpose is to engage our audience in different and exciting ways.

TOF Radio journalists Musdalafa Lyaga and Charles Kimani regularly profile individual farmers on their weekly broadcasts on ecologically sustainable agriculture. The team works closely with Farmers, scientists, researchers, and extension workers.

By visiting farmers and extension workers who work directly with farmers in their communities, the Journalists learn much more about the personal experiences of the farmers, the challenges they face, and how they are overcoming them.

Many agricultural innovations developed by researchers and also by small scale farmers themselves continue to contribute significantly to improving food security and reducing poverty.

TOF Radio documents information relating to Human Health, Animal Health, Plant Health, and Environment health. The content is mainly informed by farmer calendar, emerging issues, and feedback from the farmers.

Kilimo Hai pre-recorded programs are broadcasted every Thursday at 7.30 PM, while Wealth is in the farm live vernacular shows aired on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

TOF Radio reinforces what is good about small scale farming and helps farmers find a solution to their day to day challenges. It facilitates individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own diverse stories and to share their experiences by presenting a unique vehicle for bridging the gap between researcher and farmer.
