SUMMARY:Let’s think about... plant protection - Expert dialogue on plant protection
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, agriculture is at the same time vulnerable to and a major driver of climate change and associated loss of biodiversity. In 2021\, the UN Food Systems Summit and the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 underlined the importance of sustainable food systems and the necessity of profound transformation. In Germany\, the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) provides additional impetus in early 2022. Therefore\, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) convenes a series of expert dialogues on The Future of Sustainable Agriculture to discuss the building blocks of globally sustainable agriculture with experts from science\, policy\, civil society and private sector. The event on plant protection is the second dialogue in this series. \nPlant protection is indispensable for any agricultural activity and a key issue on the way to food security. Changing climatic conditions and global trade have raised the pressure on crop health\, which is likely to increase in the future. While agricultural intensification\, including the use of pesticides\, has allowed for growing yields over the past decades\, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity have been the price to pay. At the same time\, the use of pesticides has shown to cause negative health effects on farmers and farm workers as well as consumers. Through strategies such as the Farm-to-Fork Strategy\, which is at the heart of the European Green Deal\, the EU has embarked on a process to transform the agriculture and food sector in order to have a neutral or positive environmental impact\, reverse loss of biodiversity and ensure that everyone has access to sufficient\, safe\, nutritious food. So\, how can we ensure human health and food security within the planetary boundaries and as well contribute to the Agenda 2030 (SDG 2\, SDG 3\, SDG 15)? \nWhile many experts would agree that agricultural production systems need to become more sustainable and less reliant on pesticides\, there has been a controversial debate on the appropriate approach. Some argue that responsible use of pesticides in an integrated pest management system is a viable way forward. Others opt for organic production and again others propose an agroecological transition\, with or without the help of biotechnology. However\, given the urgency and scale of the necessary transformations\, we cannot afford business as usual. Different viewpoints need to be understood\, priorities to be set\, and pragmatic action pathways developed. \nTo this end\, in this event we will look at current challenges and opportunities\, draw inspiration from practical experience and identify priorities towards a sustainable approach to plant protection. \nFind attached the Draft Agenda for the Event \nPlant Protection Dialogue Agenda \n  \n  \nShare This

SUMMARY:Scaling up Agroecology Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Since its launch in 2018\, the Scaling up Agroecology Initiative seeks to mobilize dialogue\, cooperation and investment within and beyond the United Nations (UN) system\, to bring agroecology to scale and achieve multiple sustainable development goals through sustainable agriculture and food systems. Different UN Agencies are progressively supporting agroecology across their respective mandates in partnership with governments and key actors across the food system. \nThree years into the implementation of the Initiative (2019-2021)\, this webinar aims at sharing initial achievements\, success stories and collective understanding of the enabling environment that takes agroecology forward on the ground\, in different contexts and at different levels. The event is jointly organized by the UN advisory mechanism of the initiative\, composed by FAO\, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)\, World Food Programme (WFP)\, Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)\, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)\, and World Health Organization (WHO). \nInterpretation in English\, French\, Spanish\, Russian\, Arabic and Chinese will be provided. \nCheck out the programme and register here or follow via webcast. \nLearn more \nShare This

SUMMARY:E-discussion: The co-creation\, sharing and dissemination of local innovations for healthy soils in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Family Farming & Agroecology Discussions Community of Practice (CoP)! \nThe objective of this group is to establish synergies\, connect existing organizations and networks and encourage proactive multi-stakeholder exchanges to enhance the community of practicioners on family farming and agroecology by co-creating and sharing knowledge through focused thematic discussions. \nEach discussion will be held around a theme chosen by the co-organizers for 4 weeks. The discussions is based on a brief paper introducing the theme\, providing general background and highlighting key questions to be considered to build a shared understanding on goals of the discussion. \nMain objectives of the Family Farming & Agroecology Community of Practice Discussions: – Facilitate open access online discussions on family farming and agroecology; – Provide a “purpose-driven” multi-stakeholder space to discuss specific theme and exchange knowledge on relevant topics for family farmers and agroecology practitioners; – Establish proactive synergies and collaborations among stakeholders and existing networks of practitioners from all levels working for the promotion of family farming and agroecology in Africa; – Increase awareness and enhance knowledge-sharing on family farming and agroecology. \nE-DISCUSSION ON THE CO-CREATION\, SHARING AND DISSEMINATION OF LOCAL INNOVATIONS FOR HEALTHY SOILS IN AFRICA 20TH APRIL – 20TH MAY 2022 \nThe FAO Family Farming & Agroecology Community of Practice in Africa is implementing a discussion on ‘The co-creation\, sharing and dissemination of local innovations for healthy soils in Africa’\, co-organized by key actors working for the promotion of family farming and agroecology in different regions and on different scales in Africa. \nThe discussion will be open from the 20th of April to the 20th of May. A background paper available in the library explains the theme of the discussion and highlights key questions to be considered. \nParticipants wishing to contribute to the discussion will post via email their contributions at familyfarmingandagroecologydiscussions@dgroups.org. \nTo join the community and see all contributions online\, please register and log in at https://dgroups.org/fao/familyfarming/agroecologydiscussions. \nThe initiative is co-organized by Access Agriculture\, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA)\, Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT)\, FAO Family Farming Knowledge Platform\, FAO Agroecology Knowledge Hub\, Pan-African Farmers Organization (PAFO)\, World Rural Forum. \nShare This
